Natural, non-toxic and sustainable are buzzwords that are becoming difficult to ignore as more clients request chemical-free fabrics and fillings for their upholstery. Why are clients making those requests? What are the various products available to upholstery workrooms? How do you navigate the growing market for healthy alternative materials? Carla Pyle will answer those questions, discuss how using these products will affect established workflows and impact your bottom line, and offer a “Good-Better-Best” approach to fit client budgets. Handouts will include a vendor list, calculation worksheets, a glossary of terms, a certifications cheat sheet, layering instructions, and more.
Carla Pyle owns Natural Upholstery in Livingston, Montana. She has been an active promoter of healthy upholstery since she led a team to develop a line of organic furniture in 2007. Her focus turned to the more sustainable vocation of reupholstery soon after. She recently worked with the team at The Funky Little Chair, to develop the FLC Upholstery 200: Fundamentals online education program, and also worked as a virtual instructor for the program's student cohorts. She currently serves as a resource for other upholsterers wanting to learn how to work with natural and organic materials through her website at NaturalUpholstery.com. Carla is a founding member of the National Upholstery Association.
